Food Poisoning and Food Borne Illness
Every year in the United States there are 76 million cases of food poisoning. Incredibly, almost 400,000 people are hospitalized for complications and 5,000 people die each year. With the increasing globalization of food production, diseases from foods that were once limited to a small area are now taking place on a global scale. In recent years, we have seen major outbreaks of salmonella due to contaminated bags or pre–washed lettuce, hamburger meat and ice cream.
Symptoms of food poisoning can occur within several hours of consuming the contaminated food. Sometimes, however, it can take days until a person is symptomatic. Food poisoning can cause permanent health problems and even death. Some symptoms of food poisoning and food borne illness include:
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Dehydration
Fever
Nausea
Abdominal pain
Florida provides strict hygiene rules relating to farming, restaurants, and the food service industry in an effort to combat food borne illness. However, many times a restaurant or food purveyor will fail to follow state guidelines and will house food at unsafe temperatures or use unsanitary methods in filthy conditions to prepare food which increases the likelihood of food poisoning. These dining establishments may be liable for their negligence.
