Recently, a twenty-two (22) year old woman struck a six (6) year old child with her car in Homestead, Florida and left the scene of the accident without stopping.  The car accident took place as the child was trying to cross the street with his father and brother.  According to witnesses, the woman either didn’t see the boy or wasn’t looking forward and paying attention because he was standing in the middle of the roadway.  The car struck the boy and snapped his right leg.  When fire rescue arrived on the scene, they immediately transported the injured child to the hospital for treatment.  The young victim required surgery and a rod to be inserted into his leg.  He now has to use a wheelchair to ambulate.  Police report that the woman who fled the scene is Shakira Brown.  If you have any information regarding this accident or the whereabouts of Ms. Brown, please call Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at (305) 471-TIPS.

Dog Shot After Alleged Attack in South Florida

An interesting and disturbing recently was reported that a cyclist who was riding his bike in Davie, Florida pulled out a gun and shot a Doberman pinscher that he alleges was attacking him.  The dog was killed by the gun shot in a residential Davie community after it was rescued as a stray and found on the Miami streets.  According to the dog’s owner, the animal was in training to be a therapy dog and was harmless.  Davie police say this Broward County dog attack remains under investigation.  Police reported that the cyclist had a permit to carry the firearm.  There were no witnesses to the alleged attack and shooting.  It should be mentioned that the cyclist was not bitten by the dog or harmed in any way.  The dog’s owner believes that the cyclist was “looking for trouble” and just wanted to use the weapon.

This is a troubling story for many reasons.  First, it is bothersome that a cyclist was carrying a gun in a residential neighborhood in the morning hours.  However, I can understand that he was protecting himself from an incident just like this.  Second, it is disturbing that a dog was killed in a questioned attack.  If the attack was real and the threat was imminent, I can understand what took place.  But, if there was no real attack and the cyclist jeopardized the lives of citizens living in the community, then he should be punished.

Over the weekend, Fort Lauderdale personal injury lawyer, Howard Citron, received a call from a panic stricken mother looking for legal counsel after her two (2) year old son was mauled in the rear of the head by a neighbor’s pit bull.  The attack was completely unprovoked.  The young child was playing outside his home with parental supervision when the dog came out of nowhere and attacked the boy.  The dog bit the child in multiple places with the most significant injuries being on the child’s head and scalp.  Once the dog released its grip and the attack stopped the paramedics were called to initiate immediate medical attention to the boy.  He was taken to St. Mary’s Medical Center, a trauma hospital, for immediate evaluation by a trauma surgeon.  He was taken into surgery for repair of the significant lacerations to his scalp.  He also required treatment with hyperbaric oxygen in order help treat the wounds he suffered.  As a result of this incident, the dog was euthanized.
